Dummy ticket in Chennai: what applicants in Tamil Nadu should know

Order a dummy ticket in Chennai online and receive the reservation by email and WhatsApp. There is no document to collect in person. Chennai is an interview city, and that changes the planning

The US Consulate General on Anna Salai interviews applicants from well beyond Tamil Nadu. Because there are no US visa interviews in Bengaluru at the time of writing, many Karnataka and Kerala residents also travel here. The process needs two visits on different days: fingerprints and photo at the Visa Application Centre in the Nungambakkam area, then the interview at the consulate.

A flight itinerary is not a required document for a US visa, and the State Department advises applicants not to buy tickets before the visa is issued. If you are coming from another city, the bookings you actually need are a train or domestic flight to Chennai and a room for the gap between the two appointments. Submission centres: Egmore and beyond

VFS Global's Chennai centre has long operated from Fagun Towers on Ethiraj Salai in Egmore, and it takes applications for the UK, several Schengen states, Japan, South Korea and others. Spain's applications are handled by BLS International at its own Chennai centre. Some countries switch contractor or floor from time to time, so rely on the address printed in your appointment letter.

For centre-based applications the reservation is submitted with the file, so it should be issued a day or two before the Egmore appointment. Egmore is well connected by metro and suburban rail, which is typically quicker than driving in from OMR or Tambaram on a weekday morning.

States served by Chennai's consulates

Where you live decides which mission handles your file, and Chennai's consulates do not all cover the same territory.

• Germany: the Consulate General in Chennai is responsible for Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Puducherry. Kerala and Karnataka fall under Bengaluru.
• Japan: the Consulate General in Chennai covers Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala and Puducherry. Karnataka has its own consulate.
• France: Tamil Nadu and Kerala come under the Consulate General in Puducherry, not a Chennai mission, though files are lodged through the application centre.
• United States: applicants select the post when booking, so a Coimbatore or Madurai resident is not legally tied to Chennai, although it is the nearest.

These lists are as published at the time of writing. If you live near a state border, in Hosur or Tirupati for example, confirm with the centre prior to booking a slot.

Building an itinerary from MAA

Chennai's international network leans east. Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Colombo have frequent non-stop flights, and the Gulf hubs of Dubai, Doha and Abu Dhabi are well served. For Europe, Lufthansa flies non-stop to Frankfurt and British Airways to London Heathrow at the time of writing. There is no non-stop flight to North America.

An itinerary that follows one of these patterns has the appearance of something a Chennai traveller would actually book. A routing through Delhi adds a backtrack north and is rarely the natural choice for a trip to Southeast Asia.

Visa-free trips from Chennai still involve a flight check

Many Chennai travellers fly to nearby countries that currently let Indian passport holders in without a prior visa, or with an online permit. Entry rules for Malaysia, Thailand and Sri Lanka have changed several times recently, so read the current notice before you go. What stays constant is that the airline at MAA can ask to see a return or onward booking before issuing the boarding pass, because it carries the cost if you are refused entry.

How Chennai applicants get the document

No. Kerala and Karnataka come under the German Consulate General in Bengaluru. Chennai covers Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Puducherry.

For a Singapore trip from Chennai, do I show a return to MAA or can I return to another city?

Either is acceptable if it reflects your plan. Most Chennai residents show MAA both ways. If you will return to Tiruchirappalli or Coimbatore, use that airport.

Is a one-stop itinerary through Colombo acceptable for a Europe visa file?

Yes, if that is how you intend to fly. Consulates review the dates and the entry and exit points of the trip, not at which hub you change planes in.
