Dummy ticket for Malaysia visa-free entry: the return ticket rule

Dummy ticket for Malaysia visa-free entry - sample flight reservation MAA to KUL (Kuala Lumpur) with PNR, issued by FDT

At the time of writing, Indian citizens can use Malaysia's 30-day visa exemption until 31 December 2026. The entry conditions still include a return or onward ticket, proof of funds and the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card. A dummy ticket for a Malaysia visa therefore concerns onward-travel proof rather than a standard visa application. Its limited uses are explained below.

The 30-day exemption and when it ends

Malaysia waived visas for Indian nationals from 1 December 2023 and later extended the waiver to 31 December 2026, in the run-up to Visit Malaysia Year 2026. It allows a social or tourist visit of up to 30 days. We could not find an announcement on what happens from January 2027, so if you are travelling over New Year or later, check the Immigration Department of Malaysia's website before making the booking. If the exemption lapses, the fallback would be the eVISA system that Indians used before 2023.

The waiver removed the visa, not the entry conditions. Malaysia's announcement said Indian visitors must show a return flight ticket and evidence of adequate funds on arrival.

MDAC: the one form you must file

Every foreign visitor has to submit the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card on the Immigration Department's portal within three days before arrival. It is free. The form requests passport details, arrival and departure dates, mode of travel, last port of embarkation and your address in Malaysia.

The departure date you enter into MDAC should be the same date that appears on your return flight and should fall within 30 days of arrival. Officers see the MDAC record when they scan your passport, and a mismatch between the form and the ticket in your hand is an avoidable question.

Why Indians are sometimes refused at KLIA

Visa-free does not mean question-free. Malaysian immigration can issue a 'Not To Land' notice and send a passenger back on the next flight, and press reports through 2025 described Indian travellers refused entry for arriving without a return ticket, without sufficient funds for the stay, or without any hotel booking or host address. The airline that carried you has to fly you back, which is why check-in staff in India ask the same questions before they print a boarding pass.

What to keep on your phone and on paper:

  • the ticketed return or onward flight, dated within 30 days;
  • hotel confirmations covering the stay, or the host's address and phone number;
  • a bank or forex card, some cash, and a recent statement;
  • the MDAC confirmation email.

Onward ticket to a third country: does it count?

Yes. The condition is that you leave Malaysia, not that you fly back to India. A Kuala Lumpur to Singapore, Bangkok, Bali or Ho Chi Minh City flight within 30 days satisfies it, provided you can also enter that next country. An Indian flying KL to Singapore needs a Singapore visa; see our note on the Singapore visa and flight proof.

Leaving by land is where people get stuck. A bus or train ticket to Singapore or Hat Yai is real onward travel, but it is harder for an airline counter in Chennai or Delhi to verify than a flight PNR, and staff are entitled to refuse boarding if they are not satisfied. Budget travellers on open-ended Southeast Asia trips should read onward travel proof explained.

Routes from India worth knowing

Kuala Lumpur (KLIA Terminal 1 and the low-cost Terminal 2) has non-stop flights from a long list of Indian airports: Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Tiruchirappalli, Ahmedabad and Amritsar among them. Malaysia Airlines, Batik Air, AirAsia, IndiGo and Air India Express are the main operators. Penang and Langkawi are typically reached with a domestic connection in Kuala Lumpur, though some non-stop services from South India to Penang have operated; confirm current schedules.

If you enter at Kuala Lumpur and leave from Penang or Kota Kinabalu, that is fine. The 30 days run from the day of entry and cover the whole country, though Sabah and Sarawak keep their own immigration stamps.

When a reservation helps and when it does not

Be clear about timing. A held reservation is useful for a document that is assessed before travel: a Malaysian eVISA or pass application for a longer stay, an employer or sponsor letter, or a visa for another country on the same trip. For the airport check on the day you fly, you should hold a ticketed onward or return flight, because a reservation that has lapsed will not appear when staff check for it.

FDT issues a genuine airline reservation with a PNR checkable on the airline's Manage Booking page. It costs ₹799 / $10 per passenger for one-way, return or multi-city reservations, is delivered to you by email and WhatsApp approximately 10 minutes after payment, and is verifiable for up to 2 weeks. It is not a paid ticket and cannot be used to board. If you want to confirm one yourself, follow how to verify a dummy ticket PNR. Entry is always the Malaysian immigration officer's decision.

Frequently asked questions

Do Indians need a visa for Malaysia in 2026?

Not for visits of up to 30 days, at the time of writing. The visa exemption for Indian nationals has been announced as valid until 31 December 2026. Check the Immigration Department of Malaysia for any change after that date.

How early can I fill in the MDAC?

Within three days before your arrival date. It is free on the Immigration Department's official portal. Keep the confirmation email and confirm the departure date corresponds to your flight.

Can I enter Malaysia on a one-way ticket and book the return later?

It is risky. Malaysia's announcement of the exemption lists a return flight ticket as an entry condition, and airlines can refuse to board you without one. An onward flight to a third country within 30 days also meets the condition.

Is the 30-day visa-free stay extendable?

Do not plan on it. The exemption is for short visits, and extensions of a social visit pass are granted only in limited circumstances by Malaysian Immigration. If you need longer, apply for the appropriate visa before departure.

Will immigration accept a credit card as proof of funds?

The official announcement mentioned either a bank statement or credit cards as evidence of adequate funds. Carrying a card, some cash and a recent statement covers all three.
