Dummy ticket for Thailand visa-free entry after the 30-day change

Dummy ticket for Thailand visa-free entry after the 30-day change - sample flight reservation BLR to BKK (Bangkok) with PNR, issued by FDT

Indian tourists can enter Thailand without a visa, but the source guidance records a reduction from 60 days to 30 days from 15 September 2026. You must show departure within the permitted period, and airlines check this before boarding in India. A dummy ticket for a Thailand visa therefore concerns onward-travel proof and the dates shown on that document.

What changed on 15 September 2026

Thailand had allowed Indian tourists 60 days without a visa since July 2024. A notification from the Interior Ministry, published in the Royal Gazette on 31 August 2026, reduced the visa-exempt stay to 30 days for India and dozens of other countries, effective 15 September 2026. Thai authorities described the change as a way to stop misuse of the exemption for long stays and unauthorised work.

Two details matter for planning. Arrivals by air and sea follow the 30-day rule on each entry, while visa-exempt entries at land crossings are generally capped at two per calendar year. And anyone wanting longer than 30 days is told to get an appropriate visa before departure rather than counting on extra time once inside.

The onward ticket is a written entry condition

Thai embassies state that a foreigner entering under the tourist visa exemption must be able to show, at the port of entry, proof of onward travel: a confirmed air, train, bus or boat ticket leaving Thailand within the permitted stay. That period is now 30 days from the date of arrival.

The first check typically happens in India. The airline that flies you is responsible for taking you back if you are refused, so counter staff at Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata or Bengaluru ask to see the return or onward booking, particularly on one-way fares. Immigration at Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang or Phuket may ask again, along with your hotel address.

Old habits that no longer fit

  • A return flight on day 45 or day 60. Fares booked before the change with a stay beyond 30 days no longer correspond to the exemption. Either move the return or apply for a tourist visa through the Thai e-Visa system before you go.
  • Border runs. Leaving by land to Laos, Cambodia or Malaysia and walking back in is restricted by the two-entries-a-year limit.
  • 'I will extend at immigration.' Thai immigration offices have historically granted a paid extension of stay, but the published guidance for the new rule points longer-stay visitors to a visa. Confirm the current position with the Royal Thai Embassy before building a trip around an extension.

Count days the Thai way: the day you land is day one.

Filling in the TDAC so it matches your flights

The Thailand Digital Arrival Card replaced the paper TM6 form. You submit it free on the Immigration Bureau's TDAC website within three days before arrival and receive a QR code. It requests your arrival flight number, accommodation address and departure details.

Enter the same outbound flight you will show at the counter. If your plans are an overland exit, select the correct mode of travel rather than inventing a flight. Watch for copycat sites that charge a fee; the official form costs nothing.

Money you may be asked to show

The long-standing embassy wording for visa-exempt tourists is cash or equivalent of 10,000 baht per person or 20,000 baht per family. Indian news coverage of the September 2026 change quoted 20,000 baht per passenger. Spot checks are occasional, but when they happen officers want to see currency, not a banking app. Carrying the higher amount in baht, dollars or rupees removes the doubt.

Airports and routings from India

Bangkok has two airports. Suvarnabhumi (BKK) takes Thai Airways, Air India, IndiGo and most full-service flights; Don Mueang (DMK) is the base for Thai AirAsia and Thai Lion Air. Non-stop services run from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Kochi, Jaipur, Lucknow and others, and there are direct flights to Phuket from several Indian metros.

Open-jaw trips are common and acceptable: arrive in Bangkok, leave from Phuket or Chiang Mai. What matters is one international departure within 30 days. A domestic Bangkok to Krabi flight is not onward travel. If you are continuing to Vietnam or Malaysia, see Vietnam e-visa and flight proof for the next leg.

Reservation or paid ticket: which to hold

For the flight you check in for, hold a ticketed onward or return journey valid on that day. A held reservation suits earlier paperwork: a Thai tourist visa application for a stay over 30 days, leave approval, or a visa for another country on the same itinerary.

FDT issues a genuine airline reservation with a PNR that can be checked on the airline's Manage Booking page, at ₹799 / $10 per passenger for one-way, return or multi-city reservations, delivered by email and WhatsApp approximately 10 minutes after payment and verifiable for up to 2 weeks. Being a hold rather than a purchased fare, it will not get you onto a plane. Order at /booking.html, and read how long a dummy ticket stays valid before choosing your order date. Admission is decided by Thai immigration.

Frequently asked questions

Is Thailand still visa-free for Indian passport holders?

Yes, for tourism, at the time of writing. The change on 15 September 2026 reduced the visa-exempt stay from 60 days to 30 days per entry; it did not bring back the visa requirement.

My return flight is 40 days after arrival. Will I be allowed to board?

The airline may refuse, because the onward ticket must show departure within the 30-day visa-exempt stay. Change the return date or obtain a Thai tourist visa before travel.

Does a bus ticket to Cambodia count as onward travel from Thailand?

Embassy guidance lists confirmed air, train, bus or boat tickets. In practical terms an airline counter in India finds a flight booking easier to verify than a bus voucher, so expect more questions with an overland exit.

How many times can I enter Thailand visa-free in a year?

By air there is no published annual cap, though frequent back-to-back entries attract questioning. At land borders, visa-exempt entries are generally limited to two per calendar year.

Is the TDAC a visa?

No. It is a free digital arrival card that every foreign visitor submits within three days before arriving. It does not grant permission to enter.
