A dummy ticket remains valid until the airline's ticketing time limit. This is the deadline to pay for the held booking before it is cancelled automatically. Flight Dummy Tickets reservations remain verifiable for up to 2 weeks. Plan the order around your appointment so the reservation is still active when the documents are submitted.
| What ends a hold | The airline's ticketing time limit (TTL) |
|---|---|
| FDT reservations | Verifiable for up to 2 weeks |
| Best time to order | 2 to 3 days before submission |
| After it lapses | The PNR shows cancelled or stops retrieving |
| If you need it longer | Get a fresh reservation with a new PNR |
Why a held booking has an expiry at all
A seat held for you is a seat the airline cannot sell to anyone else. To limit that, every unticketed booking is given a ticketing time limit. The limit comes from the fare rules and from the airline's own booking policy, and airlines run automated checks that sweep their systems for unticketed records. When the deadline passes without payment, the flight segments are cancelled and the seats go back on sale.
The length of the limit is not a fixed number. It varies with:
- The airline. Each carrier sets its own policy for agency bookings.
- How far away the flight is. A departure months ahead typically gets a longer limit than one next week.
- The fare class. Discounted fares frequently demand ticketing sooner than flexible ones.
- Demand on that flight. Airlines shorten limits on flights that are filling up.
This is why two reservations made on the same day can last different lengths of time, and why nobody honest can promise a hold of a month or more. What a held booking is in the first place is covered in what is a dummy ticket.
The window you can plan around
Flight Dummy Tickets reservations are verifiable for up to 2 weeks from issue. Treat 'up to' as the operative words and plan your submission for the first days of that window, not the last.
The document you submit is read on the day of submission and, if the officer chooses, looked up while the file is being assessed. You control the first of those dates. You do not control the second, so the sensible aim is a booking that is fresh when it goes in.
Timing the order against your appointment
Work backwards from the day you submit documents.
| Situation | When to order |
|---|---|
| Appointment at a visa application centre (VFS, BLS, TLS) | 2 to 3 days before the appointment |
| Online application with document upload | The day before you upload and pay the visa fee |
| Embassy interview with documents carried in person | 2 to 3 days before the interview |
| Onward proof for a flight you are taking | 1 to 2 days before departure |
Ordering a month ahead 'to be safe' is the most common timing error: the reservation will be gone before anyone reviews it. Ordering on the morning of the appointment is the second: it leaves no time to correct a name.
Your travel dates are a separate matter. Those should sit comfortably after the expected decision date. For Schengen visas, applications can be lodged up to six months before the trip and the Visa Code sets a normal decision period of 15 calendar days, which may be extended to 45, so a travel date at least four to six weeks after the appointment is prudent. Processing times for other countries are published on their official sites and change frequently.
When processing outlasts the hold
Many visa decisions take longer than any reservation lasts. That is normal and consulates know it, since their own guidance frequently advises applicants not to buy tickets before the decision. The itinerary's job is to indicate your intended dates as part of the file submitted on that day.
Two habits help:
- On submission day, take a dated screenshot of the booking on the airline's Manage Booking page. The lookup itself is described in how to verify a dummy ticket PNR.
- If the consulate later requests an updated itinerary or calls you for an interview, get a fresh reservation for the same dates and send that.
What a lapsed reservation looks like
After the deadline, the airline website either shows the flights as cancelled or returns no booking for that reference. The PDF on your phone still looks exactly the same, which is the trap. Always judge by the airline's page, never by the document.
A lapsed hold has no cost and no consequence for you with the airline. There is nothing to cancel and no penalty. It simply stops being evidence.
Getting it re-issued
An expired PNR cannot be revived or extended. A re-issue is a new reservation with a new booking reference, typically on the same route and dates. The flight numbers may change if the original flight is no longer available in the same class.
When you receive the reservation, check that the dates still correspond to your hotel booking, insurance and cover letter, and replace the old PDF everywhere you keep it so the two do not get mixed up. If your appointment was postponed, you can order again through the booking form a few days before the new date. Costs are set out in dummy ticket price in India.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay extra to keep one PNR alive for a month?
No service can extend an airline's ticketing deadline. A longer period is covered by issuing a new reservation when the first one lapses.
My appointment got rescheduled by three weeks. Is my reservation still usable?
Probably not, since three weeks is beyond the verifiable window. Check the booking on the airline's site a few days before the new date and arrange a fresh reservation if it no longer retrieves.
Does the hold end at midnight on the last day?
The deadline is a date and time set in the airline's system and it can fall at any hour. This is another reason to verify on the day you submit instead of counting days.
Will a consulate refuse my visa because the PNR expired during processing?
No consulate publishes a rule to that effect, and the decision rests on the whole application. If an officer wants a current itinerary they can request one, so keep an eye on your email and respond quickly.
Is validity different for one-way and return reservations?
The trip type does not decide it. The airline, fare class and distance from departure do.
