A dummy ticket is an airline reservation held in your name that has not been paid for and ticketed. It includes actual flights and a booking reference, or PNR. It does not have an e-ticket number. You can use it to indicate the proposed travel plan where accepted, but it does not allow you to board the flight.
| Proper name | Held (unticketed) flight reservation |
|---|---|
| Has a PNR? | Yes, a six-character booking reference |
| Has an e-ticket number? | No, that is issued only after payment |
| Can you board with it? | No |
| Typical use | Visa files and onward-travel proof |
A booking that stops one step before payment
Every airline booking is made in two stages. First a seat is reserved: the passenger's name, the flights and the dates are stored in the airline's reservation system as a Passenger Name Record. Second, the fare is paid and the airline issues a ticket against that record. Most people never notice the gap because a website does both within seconds.
Travel agents work differently. Through a global distribution system (GDS) such as Amadeus, Sabre or Travelport, an agent can create the reservation and leave it unticketed until a deadline the airline sets. During that window the record is real: it sits in the airline's system and the seat is held. A dummy ticket is simply that record, printed as an itinerary. The phrase is trade slang. Airlines call it a booking on hold or an unticketed PNR.
PNR versus e-ticket number
These two codes tell you exactly what you are holding.
- PNR or booking reference: six letters and digits, for example K7QW2M. It identifies the reservation. Both a held booking and a paid ticket have one.
- E-ticket number: thirteen digits, starting with the airline's three-digit code (098 for Air India, 176 for Emirates). It exists only once money has changed hands and it is what check-in systems check for.
So a document with a PNR and no thirteen-digit number is a reservation. A document with both is a ticket. If someone sells you a 'confirmed ticket' for a few hundred rupees, check for the ticket number: it will not be there, and it should not be.
What the document shows
A reservation itinerary is typically a one-page PDF. It lists each passenger's name as in the passport, the booking reference, the airline and flight numbers, departure and arrival airports with dates and local times, the booking class and the status of each flight. It typically also names the agency that made the booking.
It does not show a ticket number, a fare receipt or a baggage allowance you can rely on, because no fare has been paid. You can review the layout in this sample PDF.
Who uses one, and why
The biggest group is visa applicants. Many checklists request a flight reservation or itinerary, and several authorities tell applicants not to pay for travel before the decision. The UK's visitor guidance says you should not book travel until you get a decision, and the Schengen Visa Code lists a 'reservation of or a return or round ticket' among the documents that show intention to leave. A held booking answers that request without putting the full airfare at risk.
The second group is travellers who need to demonstrate an onward or return flight: people entering a country visa-free or on arrival, or flying on a one-way ticket. That side is covered in onward travel proof explained.
Smaller groups include employees who need an itinerary for a leave application, and people applying for a passport-related or exit formality that requests travel dates.
What it is not
- Not a boarding document. With no ticket number, the airline will not check you in.
- Not permanent. The airline cancels an unticketed record when its ticketing deadline passes. Holds typically last days, not months.
- Not a fake. A PDF typed up in an editor with an invented code is a different thing altogether and can get an application refused. The difference is explained in the risks of free ticket generators.
- Not a guarantee of a visa. It records your intended dates. The consulate decides on the whole file.
How to tell a genuine reservation
The test is simple: the booking reference should open on the airline's own website when entered with your surname. If the airline's system records your name and flights, the reservation exists. If it does not, the paper is worth nothing. The steps are in how to verify a dummy ticket PNR.
Flight Dummy Tickets issues this kind of reservation: a held airline booking with a PNR you can check under Manage Booking, for ₹799 per passenger, sent by email and WhatsApp approximately 10 minutes after payment. It is not a paid ticket and cannot be used to fly. You can order through the booking form.
Frequently asked questions
Is a dummy ticket legal?
Yes. Holding a reservation prior to payment is a normal airline and travel-agency practice. What is illegal is submitting a forged or edited document that was never in an airline system. Present a held reservation as what it is: a reservation, not a purchased ticket.
Why is it called a dummy ticket if it is a real booking?
The name is informal. It is called 'dummy' because it is not a ticket you can travel on, not because the booking is fictitious. Embassies and airlines use terms such as flight reservation, flight itinerary or booking on hold.
Does a dummy ticket have a seat number?
Typically not. A held booking reserves a place on the flight in a booking class, but seat selection and baggage are typically fixed only after ticketing.
Is a flight itinerary the same thing as a dummy ticket?
In visa checklists, yes in practical terms. 'Flight itinerary', 'flight reservation' and 'dummy ticket' all describe a document showing reserved flights. The useful question is whether the booking reference retrieves on the airline's website.
