A dummy ticket is a held reservation recording your proposed journey, for which you pay a service charge. An actual ticket is a paid booking that allows you to fly and requires the airfare. Both can show travel dates in a visa file. Compare the document requested and the amount you would have at risk while awaiting the decision.
| Core difference | An actual ticket has a 13-digit e-ticket number; a reservation does not |
|---|---|
| Money at risk | A flat fee versus the fare or its cancellation charges |
| Boarding | Only with a paid ticket |
| Reservation suits | Visa files where dates may still move |
| Paid ticket suits | Fixed dates, visa in hand, or a checklist that demands it |
Side-by-side comparison
| Point | Dummy ticket (held reservation) | Real ticket (non-refundable) | Real ticket (refundable fare) |
|---|---|---|---|
| What you pay | Small flat service fee | Full fare | Full fare, typically a higher fare class |
| If the visa is refused | Nothing further to lose | Most of the fare is lost; some taxes may come back | Fare returns minus cancellation charges, after a wait |
| If dates change | Get a new reservation | Change fee plus fare difference | Lower or no change fee, fare difference applies |
| Identifier | PNR only | PNR and e-ticket number | PNR and e-ticket number |
| How long it lasts | Until the airline's ticketing deadline | Until you fly | Until you fly or cancel |
| Check-in and boarding | Not possible | Yes | Yes |
What each document actually proves
A reservation proves intent: these are the flights you plan to take, on these dates, and an airline has a record of it. A ticket proves commitment: you have paid for those flights.
Visa officers are primarily interested in the first. They read the itinerary to see whether the dates fit your leave, funds and stated purpose. This is why official guidance frequently requests a booking rather than a purchase. The UK's visitor guidance says you should not book travel until you get a decision, and the Schengen Visa Code's list of supporting documents refers to a reservation of a return or round ticket. A paid ticket does not earn extra credit in those systems; it only raises your cost if the answer is no.
Airline staff are interested in the second only for the flight you are about to take. For the onward flight out of your destination, a verifiable booking is what they check for.
Where the refund risk hides
'Refundable' rarely means you get everything back. The fare rules decide the cancellation charge, the refund goes back to the original payment method on the airline's or agent's timeline, and a booking made through a portal can carry the portal's own fee on top. On international fares for a family, the amount blocked on your card for those weeks is itself a cost, especially if you also need to demonstrate a healthy bank balance in the same application.
Non-refundable fares are cheaper but turn a refusal or a delayed passport into a near-total loss. Date-change fees and fare differences add up quickly when a visa arrives a week later than planned.

Boarding is the hard line
No reservation, however genuine, provides you with on an aircraft. Check-in systems need a ticket number. Before departure you must purchase a real ticket, and it does not have to correspond to the reservation in your visa file flight for flight. Keep the trip within the visa's validity dates, its permitted length of stay and, for Schengen, the entry rules of the visa you were given. A large unexplained change, such as entering through a different country from the one that issued the visa, can draw questions at the border.
When a paid refundable ticket makes more sense
- The checklist explicitly asks for a ticket. A few missions and some visa categories request a confirmed or paid ticket, sometimes only at passport collection. If the official checklist says so, follow it.
- You already hold the visa or do not need one, and your dates are fixed. Purchase the ticket; you will need it anyway.
- Fares are climbing fast for a peak-season trip and the refundable fare is close to the regular one. Locking the price may be worth the cancellation charge.
- The decision will take longer than any hold lasts and you do not want to refresh a reservation.
When a reservation is the better tool
- The visa outcome or the appointment date is uncertain.
- The embassy's own guidance advises applicants not to purchase before the decision.
- Several family members are applying and the combined fare is large.
- You need an onward or return booking to show at check-in for a visa-free or visa-on-arrival destination, while your real plans are open. See onward travel proof explained.

Frequently asked questions
Can a dummy ticket be converted into a real ticket?
Not typically by you. The hold sits with the agency that created it, and the fare is not guaranteed. In practical terms people purchase a fresh ticket after the visa is issued, frequently on whichever airline is cheapest at that stage.
Do embassies prefer a paid ticket over a reservation?
Most checklists request a reservation or itinerary and several advise against buying before the decision. Where a mission does request a paid ticket, its checklist says so. Read the current checklist for your category.
Is a refundable ticket fully refundable if my visa is refused?
Only if the fare rules say so. Many refundable fares still deduct a cancellation charge, and a visa refusal is not typically a special ground for a full refund.
Does my real ticket need the same flight numbers as the reservation I submitted?
No. The reservation showed your plan at the time of application. Your actual ticket should respect the visa's dates and conditions, but the airline and flight numbers can differ.
