Employment visa decisions mainly depend on the job offer, work permit and qualifications. A dummy ticket for a work visa is relevant when the checklist requests a reservation, as with Italy's national employment visa. It may also help when an employer requests a travel plan before your joining date. Review the requirements for your category before ordering.
| What decides the visa | Employment contract, work permit or sponsorship, qualifications |
|---|---|
| Usually no itinerary | US H-1B, UK Skilled Worker, Germany national employment visa, UAE employer-sponsored entry permit |
| Itinerary listed | Italy employment visa (one-way reservation), at the time of writing |
| Typical direction | One-way, dated just before the joining date |
| Dependants | Separate applications, frequently with later travel dates |
The permit is the centre of the file
An employment visa answers one question: has this person been lawfully hired for a job the country allows a foreigner to do? The evidence is produced primarily by the employer. In the UK it is a Certificate of Sponsorship. In the US it is an approved petition. In Italy it is the nulla osta issued by the immigration desk in the province where you will work. In the UAE the employer obtains the work permit and the entry permit before departure.
Because the employer has already committed to a start date, the consulate has little reason to test your travel plans the way it does for a tourist. That is why many work visa checklists never mention a flight.
Which routes list a flight reservation
| Route | Flight reservation? | Note |
|---|---|---|
| UK Skilled Worker | Not required | Online application based on the Certificate of Sponsorship. |
| US H-1B / L-1 | Not required | Interview is about the petition and the role. |
| Germany employment (national visa) | Not in the checklist we reviewed | Contract, qualification recognition and insurance carry the file. |
| Italy subordinate employment (type D) | One-way reservation listed | Submitted with the nulla osta at VFS; confirm the current checklist for your consulate. |
| UAE and other Gulf employment | Not submitted by the worker | The sponsor applies; many employers issue the actual ticket themselves. |
| Schengen short-stay business or training trip | Return reservation expected | This is a short-stay visa, not a work visa, and follows the usual Schengen rules. |
Other countries' long-stay work categories vary and change, so read the checklist for your category before assuming either way. If your trip is really a two-week client visit, review the business visa requirements instead; our flight itinerary guide explains what a short-stay file needs.
Dating a reservation around the joining date
Where a reservation is requested, three dates should line up: the start date in your contract, the validity start of the permit, and the flight. A flight two to seven days before the joining date looks ordinary. A flight a month earlier raises the question of what you will do, and live on, in the meantime.
Fly to the city where the job is, or the nearest international airport to it. A contract with a firm in Turin and a flight to Rome is not wrong, but Milan or Turin is easier to read. If processing overruns and the joining date moves, ask the employer for a revised letter first, then update the itinerary to match it.
One-way travel and what happens at the airport in India
A work visa holder travels one-way as a matter of course, and airlines accept that because the visa itself shows the right to stay. The check you are more likely to face is on the Indian side.
If your passport is in the Emigration Check Required (ECR) category and you are going to work in one of the notified ECR countries, which include the Gulf states, you need emigration clearance through the government's eMigrate system before departure. This is a legal requirement for the worker and has nothing to do with the flight reservation, but it is the document immigration officers at Indian airports check for. Arrange it through your employer or registered recruiting agent well before the travel date.
When your family follows later
Spouses and children typically apply as dependants, either with you or after you have settled. Their file can have a different rhythm from yours:
- If they apply together with you but will travel later, their reservation can indicate the later date. It does not have to correspond to your flight.
- If they apply after you have moved, a one-way reservation to your city of residence, dated after school terms or notice periods end, is the natural document.
- If the category is a family visit rather than dependant residence, a return itinerary is expected, as on any visitor visa.
Keep each traveller's name exactly as in the passport, since each PNR is checked against the individual application.
Who pays for the ticket, and why that affects timing
Many overseas contracts include a joining ticket. If your employer is buying it, do not purchase your own, and do not let a reservation in the visa file contradict what the offer letter says about travel. Where the contract is silent and you are paying, wait for the visa before buying. Work visa processing times are less predictable than tourist ones because they depend on the permit authority as well as the consulate, and a missed non-refundable flight is a common loss.
Some relocation teams request a tentative itinerary so they can arrange housing or airport pickup. A held reservation serves that purpose without committing money. For how long such a hold lasts, see how long a dummy ticket stays valid.
Ordering one if your checklist requires it
FDT furnishes a genuine airline reservation with a PNR that can be looked up on the airline's Manage Booking page. The price is ₹799 / $10 per passenger for one-way, return or multi-city reservations, delivery is by email and WhatsApp in approximately 10 minutes, and it remains verifiable for up to two weeks, so place the order a day or two prior to submission. It is a held reservation and cannot be used to board. Order at the booking page or through the chat assistant. Whether the visa is granted depends on the permit and the consulate, not on this document.
Frequently asked questions
Does a UK Skilled Worker visa application need a flight booking?
No. It is filed online with the Certificate of Sponsorship reference, proof of English and, where required, funds. A flight booking is not among the listed documents.
My Gulf employer says they will send the ticket. Should I still get a reservation?
Typically not. The sponsor applies for your entry permit and frequently issues the actual ticket. Focus on your contract attestation and, if your passport is ECR, emigration clearance.
Is a return leg expected on an employment visa itinerary?
Not typically. A multi-year contract has no return date, and Italy's employment checklist asks specifically for a one-way reservation. A return leg is expected only on short business or training trips.
Can I show a flight before the permit's start date so I can settle in early?
Avoid it. The visa is typically issued to start with the permit, so an earlier flight is a date you could not legally use. Keep the flight on or shortly before the joining date.
I am changing jobs abroad and re-entering on a new work visa. Does the same logic apply?
Yes. The new permit and contract are what matter. Add a reservation only if the checklist for the new visa lists one, and date it to the new joining date.
