Student visa decisions mainly concern your admission, funds and study plan. A dummy ticket for a student visa is relevant when the checklist specifically requests a reservation, as with Italy's long-stay study visa. Where required, the usual document is a one-way reservation with a departure date close to the beginning of the course.
| US F-1 | No flight itinerary in the required documents; entry allowed no earlier than 30 days before the I-20 start date |
|---|---|
| UK Student visa | No flight booking required; arrival up to 1 month before a course longer than 6 months |
| Italy study visa (type D) | Checklist requests a one-way ticket reservation and states that the PNR will be verified |
| Direction | One-way is normal for a course longer than a few months |
| Reservation cost | ₹799 per passenger, one-way or return |
Start with the checklist, because student visas differ sharply
A tourist visa file typically contains a return itinerary. A student file is built around different papers: the I-20 for the United States, the CAS for the United Kingdom, the letter of acceptance for Canada, the Confirmation of Enrolment for Australia, the university admission letter for European countries. The flight is a minor item in some systems and absent in others.
So before you spend anything, open the official checklist for your exact category at your application centre and search it for the words flight, ticket and itinerary. If none appears, you do not need a reservation for the application, although you may still want one for your own planning or for a university arrival form.
Country by country: what is asked about flights
| Destination | Core document | Flight reservation in the checklist? |
|---|---|---|
| USA (F-1) | Form I-20, SEVIS fee receipt, DS-160 | No. The interview is about your studies, funding and ties. |
| UK (Student route) | CAS from a licensed sponsor | No. The online form requests a planned travel date only. |
| Canada (study permit) | Letter of acceptance and, for most applicants, a provincial attestation letter | No. Canadian colleges commonly tell students not to buy non-refundable tickets before approval. |
| Italy (study, type D) | University pre-enrolment and admission | Yes. The VFS checklist for India requests a one-way reservation with a verifiable PNR, at the time of writing. |
| Germany (national visa) | Admission letter, blocked account or other proof of funds | The German missions' national visa checklists we reviewed do not list a flight booking. |
Other Schengen states set their own long-stay rules, so France, Spain, the Netherlands, Poland and the rest must be checked individually. If you are instead going for a short course of under 90 days on a Schengen short-stay visa, the ordinary tourist-style rules apply and a return itinerary is expected. Our Italy guide covers that case.
Why a one-way reservation is the honest document for a student
A two-year master's student has no real return date. Airlines generally sell tickets only about eleven months ahead, so a return leg for the end of a long course cannot even be booked. Consulates know this, which is why Italy's study checklist specifically says one-way.
What the officer checks on a student itinerary is simple: the passenger name corresponds to the passport, the departure is from an Indian airport you could plausibly use, the arrival city is consistent for your university, and the date sits sensibly before the course begins. A student admitted to Bologna who shows a flight to Milan or Bologna a week before orientation has a coherent file. A flight to a different country three months early does not.
If you are travelling for a short exchange or summer school with a fixed end date, use a return reservation instead, because your stay has a clear end.
Dating the flight against your course start
Each country limits how early a student may arrive, and your reservation should respect it.
- United States: an F-1 visa can be issued up to 365 days before the programme start date on the I-20, but you cannot enter more than 30 days before that date.
- United Kingdom: you can typically arrive up to one month before a course of more than six months, or up to seven days before a shorter course. The permitted date is stated with your visa decision.
- Schengen national visas: the visa is issued with a start date. Select a flight a few days to two weeks before the first day of teaching, and never before the visa could realistically be issued.
Also review the university's own calendar. Many admission letters give a reporting or orientation date that is earlier than the first lecture, and that is the date your itinerary should work towards.
Buying the real ticket too early is the expensive mistake
Student fares from India in August and September are among the highest of the year, and many students are tempted to lock a cheap fare in May before the visa is decided. If the visa is delayed past the course start, or refused, a non-refundable ticket is lost or costs a heavy change fee.
A held reservation exists for exactly this gap. It shows the intended route and date without committing the fare. Once the visa is in your passport, purchase the actual ticket, and check whether your airline offers a student fare with extra baggage, since several carriers flying from India do. The difference between the two documents is explained in dummy ticket vs real ticket.
Other places a student is asked for travel details
Even when the consulate does not want an itinerary, three other parties may ask about your travel:
- University arrival or airport pickup forms, which need a flight number and date. Fill these only after you have bought the actual ticket.
- Education loan lenders, some of whom release the travel component against a quotation or itinerary.
- Airline check-in staff, who review your visa and passport on the day of travel. A student visa removes the need for a return ticket in almost all cases.
None of these is a visa requirement, so do not add an itinerary to a US, UK or Canadian file just because a friend did for a Schengen country.
Getting a reservation when your checklist does ask
FDT issues a held airline reservation with a PNR you can check on the airline's Manage Booking page. It costs ₹799 per passenger for a one-way or a return, is delivered by email and WhatsApp in approximately 10 minutes, and stays verifiable for up to two weeks, so order it close to your submission date rather than when you receive your admission. It is not a paid ticket and cannot be used to fly. You can order at the booking page; how the PNR check works is shown in our verification guide. The visa decision remains entirely with the consulate.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a flight ticket for a US F-1 visa interview?
No. The required documents are the passport, DS-160 confirmation, fee receipt, photo and Form I-20. A flight itinerary is not on that list, and you cannot enter the US more than 30 days before your programme start date in any case.
Will a one-way itinerary make a student visa officer doubt that I will return?
Not for a long course. A return date a year or more away cannot be booked, and Italy's study checklist explicitly requests a one-way reservation. Intent to return is assessed from your funds, family ties and study plan.
My course starts on 15 September. What date should the reservation show?
Typically a few days to two weeks before the reporting or orientation date in your admission letter, and within the early-arrival limit of the country: 30 days for the US, one month for most UK courses.
Can my parents travelling with me to settle me in use the same reservation?
They need their own visa, typically a visitor visa, and their own return itinerary. Their application is separate from yours, so order a return reservation in their names with dates that match their short stay.
The visa is delayed and my reservation dates have passed. What now?
If the consulate requests an updated itinerary, submit a fresh reservation with the new intended date. Also ask your university for a late-arrival letter, because the latest permitted joining date matters more than the flight.
