Italy's tourist checklist in India requests a "copy of flight tickets or airline reservations (round trip)". You may therefore submit a reservation without purchasing the full airfare. Use the VFS Global centre for your jurisdiction. The Italian Embassy or one of the three Consulates General will decide the application.
| Checklist wording | "Copy of flight tickets or airline reservations (round trip)" |
|---|---|
| Where you submit | VFS Global Italy centre for your state |
| Who decides | Embassy in New Delhi or Consulates General in Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru |
| Nonstop from India | Air India: Delhi to Milan and Delhi to Rome |
| Multi-country trips | All travel and accommodation bookings must be submitted |
| FDT reservation | ₹799 per passenger, one-way or return |
The air ticket line on the Italian checklist
The tourist (C) checklist used by the Consulate General of Italy in Bengaluru has eleven items. The last one is headed "Air Ticket" and reads: "Copy of flight tickets or airline reservations (round trip)." The checklists for the other Italian missions in India are built the same way, though you should download the one for your own jurisdiction from the VFS Italy page.
Two other lines affect how you prepare the flight document:
- Under travel itinerary: "If the applicant is travelling to any other Schengen countries apart from Italy, all travel and accommodation bookings must be submitted."
- The cover letter must state "travel dates, itinerary and duration of stay", and the employer's leave letter must give the sanctioned leave dates.
So four documents carry dates: reservation, cover letter, leave letter and hotel bookings. They have to agree to the day.
Four missions, and your address picks one
Unlike Germany, Italy ties you to a jurisdiction. Files are decided by the Embassy in New Delhi or the Consulates General in Mumbai, Kolkata and Bengaluru. The Bengaluru consulate covers Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry. Its checklist states that the passport should be issued within that jurisdiction; otherwise you need address proof of at least six months.
VFS Global runs the collection centres, 14 of them across 13 Indian cities according to the company's last contract announcement. Check the VFS site for which centre feeds which mission before making the booking, because a slot in the wrong jurisdiction is of no use to you.
Rome in, Milan out: open-jaw reservations
Air India flies nonstop from Delhi to Milan Malpensa and, since 25 March 2026, from Delhi to Rome Fiumicino four times a week. From other cities the usual route is one stop through Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Paris or Istanbul, or via Delhi.
Italy is long and thin, and most first-time itineraries run one way along it: Rome, Florence, Venice, then Milan, or the reverse. Flying back from where you started wastes a day. An open-jaw booking, into Rome and out of Milan or Venice, is normal and still counts as a round trip for the checklist because it shows entry to and exit from the Schengen area.
Mind the Rome frequency. A four-times-weekly flight limits which dates work, so check the days before fixing your leave.
| Trip shape | Reservation to show |
|---|---|
| Rome only, or Rome and Amalfi | Return to Rome |
| Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan | Open-jaw: into Rome, out of Milan or Venice |
| Milan, Lake Como, Swiss day trip | Return to Milan |
When other countries are on the same trip
Because the checklist requests all bookings in every Schengen country you visit, a Swiss or French extension has to be documented as fully as the Italian part: hotels there, and how you cross. The Milan to Zurich or Milan to Nice train is fine as the crossing; name it in the cover letter.
Then count nights. Italy takes the application only if it has the most nights, or equal nights and first entry. A Swiss-heavy trip that happens to fly into Milan belongs with Switzerland. The Schengen guide has the full main-destination rule along with the 90/180-day limit, the €30,000 insurance requirement and the standard advice not to buy tickets before the visa is issued.
Vatican City and San Marino need nothing extra. They sit inside Italy with no border checks.
Why Italian slots vanish before summer
Italy is among the most requested Schengen countries from India, and by mid-2026 appointment slots in the metros were being taken within minutes of release. Peak-season processing also runs longer than the standard period.
The practical order is: secure the appointment, then get the dated documents. A reservation ordered the day you start hunting for slots may no longer be checkable by the time you sit at the VFS counter. Order it a few days before the appointment, and choose travel dates that leave several weeks for processing in summer.
Refundable bookings and where a reservation fits
Italian consulates in India advise applicants to prefer refundable arrangements, since the consulate takes no responsibility for money lost if a visa is not granted. A held reservation is the cheapest way to follow that advice.
FDT issues a genuine airline reservation with a PNR you can check on the airline's Manage Booking page. It costs ₹799 / $10 per passenger for one-way, return or multi-city reservations and is delivered by email and WhatsApp approximately 10 minutes after payment. An open-jaw trip is still one outbound and one inbound flight; a routing with extra flight legs is a multi-city reservation at the same ₹799 / $10 per passenger. Order at the booking page, or read how a reservation differs from a ticket first. It cannot be used to board, and the decision on the visa is the consulate's alone.
Frequently asked questions
Will Italy accept a reservation that flies into Rome and out of Milan?
The checklist requests round-trip tickets or reservations. An open-jaw booking shows entry and exit and suits a one-direction itinerary, provided your hotels follow the same path.
I live in Hyderabad. Which Italian mission handles my visa?
Telangana falls under the Consulate General of Italy in Bengaluru, along with Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry. Apply through the VFS centre linked to that consulate.
My passport was issued in another state. Is that a problem?
The Bengaluru checklist states that a passport issued outside the jurisdiction must be supported by address proof of at least six months. Review the checklist for your own mission.
Do I need a separate booking for a Vatican visit?
No. Vatican City has no border control with Italy and needs no visa or travel booking of its own.
