The New Delhi visa office's additional checklist, IMM 5881, asks tourist applicants for a detailed itinerary including proof of air ticket and hotel booking. For a Canada visitor visa, a dummy ticket furnishes a held airline reservation recording the proposed flights. This allows you to document the journey without paying the full fare while Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) considers the application.

Reading the IMM 5881 itinerary line carefully
IRCC's online portal builds a personalised document checklist for you, and its general guidance mentions flight details and proof of accommodation as ways to indicate your visit plan. On top of that, the visa office responsible for India publishes IMM 5881. Its section for tourists opens with an itinerary item that requests a detailed itinerary including proof of air ticket and hotel booking.
The checklist says processing could be delayed if listed documents are missing. It also warns that false statements or fraudulent documents lead to refusal and a possible five-year ban. So whatever you upload must be what it claims to be. A held reservation should be described as a reservation, and the PNR should be live when you submit.
Note the difference by purpose. People visiting family or friends are requested an invitation letter and details of the host instead of a hotel booking. The transit section requests a copy of the air ticket and itinerary with the dates and times of each entry and exit.
Should you buy the actual ticket first?
IRCC does not promise a decision by any date. Published processing times for visitor visas from India move around a great deal and have at times run into months. Paying for Toronto or Vancouver fares before approval means carrying that risk yourself, and a paid ticket does not weigh more with the officer than a credible plan backed by funds and ties to India.
A sensible approach is to upload a reservation or itinerary that shows the intended routing and dates, state in your cover letter that tickets will be purchased once the visa is issued, and keep your hotel bookings cancellable. The difference between the two documents is explained in dummy ticket vs real ticket.
Choosing dates when the processing time is uncertain
This is the hard part of a Canadian application. Check IRCC's processing-time tool for visitor visas from India on the day you apply, add time for biometrics and passport submission, and set your travel date beyond that. If the tool shows approximately three months, an itinerary departing in three weeks looks careless.
A reservation is typically verifiable for approximately two weeks, far shorter than Canadian processing. That is normal. What matters is that it is live when you upload it. If IRCC later sends a request for updated documents, you can supply a fresh itinerary then. Do not keep re-ordering every fortnight on your own initiative.
Your dates should agree with the leave-of-absence letter the checklist asks employed applicants to provide, and with the duration stated in any invitation.
Routes from India and the transit trap
Non-stop flights link Delhi with Toronto and Vancouver on Air India, and Air Canada serves Toronto from Delhi, with other routes varying by season at the time of writing. From Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad or Amritsar most itineraries involve one stop.
The stop matters for the visa file:
- Via the Gulf (Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi): no transit visa for a normal connection.
- Via Europe (Frankfurt, Paris, Amsterdam, London): Indian passport holders may need an airport transit visa unless they hold certain visas such as a valid Canadian or US one. Check the rule for that country.
- Via the USA: there is no airside transit. You need a US visa even to change planes.
An itinerary through New York without a US visa in your passport invites questions, so select a routing you could actually fly.
Biometrics, passport submission and what VFS does
After you submit online, IRCC issues a biometric instruction letter. You then book a slot at a Canada Visa Application Centre, operated in India by VFS Global in cities including New Delhi, Chandigarh, Jalandhar, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Pune, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata. Book it quickly, because processing does not move until biometrics are in.
The centre does not review your itinerary. Your documents are already in the portal. If approved, you are asked to deliver your passport through the centre for the visa counterfoil. Purchase the ticket after the passport comes back and check the visa's expiry and number of entries first.
Getting the reservation
Flight Dummy Tickets issues an airline reservation with a PNR that can be checked on the airline's Manage Booking page. It is ₹799 / $10 per passenger for one-way, return or multi-city reservations, with multi-city available at the same price, and a hotel reservation can be added for ₹799 per hotel per passenger if you need accommodation proof for the same checklist line. Delivery is by email and WhatsApp in approximately 10 minutes. It cannot be used to board and it does not influence IRCC's decision.
Order from the booking page on the day you plan to submit, and confirm the PNR yourself using the steps in how to verify a dummy ticket PNR before uploading the PDF.
Frequently asked questions
Is a flight itinerary mandatory for a Canada visitor visa from India?
The New Delhi visa office checklist IMM 5881 says tourists must furnish a detailed itinerary including proof of air ticket and hotel booking. Use the personalised checklist in your IRCC Portal account as the final word for your case.
I am visiting my daughter in Brampton. Do I still need a hotel booking?
The family and friends section of the checklist requests an invitation letter, the host's status documents and proof of their income instead. An itinerary recording your intended flights is still useful to support the dates in the invitation.
My reservation will expire long before IRCC decides. Does that hurt my application?
A held reservation records your plan on the date you applied. If the officer wants updated travel details, IRCC sends a request through your account and you can upload a new itinerary then.
Can I show a Canada itinerary that connects through the United States?
Only if you hold a valid US visa, because the US does not allow airside transit without one. Otherwise select a routing through the Gulf or a non-stop from Delhi.
Does a multiple-entry Canadian visa mean my itinerary dates do not matter?
They still matter for the application. The officer assesses the trip you describe. Once a multiple-entry visa is issued you can travel on different dates within its validity.
