First decide which route you are on
The split is simple. Look in your passport for a valid visa or residence permit issued by a Schengen country, the United States, the United Kingdom or Ireland. If you have one, the official e-visa site will allow you to select India and proceed. If you do not, the site will not issue an e-visa and you need a sticker visa from the Turkish mission before travel.
Two points catch people out. The supporting visa must be valid on the day you enter Turkey, not merely on the day you apply. And the e-visa system states that electronic visas and electronic residence permits are not accepted as supporting documents, so a visa that exists only as an online record is unlikely to qualify. Check the wording on the e-visa site for your case.
What you tick when you apply for the e-visa
The e-visa form shows a list of conditions for your nationality and requests that you confirm each. For Indian ordinary passport holders these include:
- travelling for tourism or business;
- holding a valid supporting visa or residence permit as described above;
- holding a return ticket and a hotel reservation;
- having at least USD 50 for each day of the stay.
Nothing is uploaded. You declare, pay, and download the e-visa within minutes. The declaration is not a formality, though: the e-visa is valid only if the conditions are true when you travel, and it instructs you to carry the supporting documents. Tick the boxes only when you actually have the bookings.
Who verifies those conditions later
The airline does it first. At check-in in Delhi or Mumbai, or at a Gulf transit desk, staff review the e-visa, then turn the pages to find the Schengen, US, UK or Irish visa, and frequently request the return booking. Passengers whose supporting visa had expired have been refused boarding even with a paid e-visa in hand.
Turkish border police at Istanbul can request the same things. The return flight should fall within 30 days of entry, since the e-visa is single entry with a 30-day stay, and within the 180-day validity that starts on the date you chose in the application.
No Schengen or US visa: the sticker visa file
Most first-time Indian travellers are on this route. Applications are lodged through the visa application centre appointed by the Turkish Embassy in New Delhi and the Consulates General in Mumbai and Hyderabad, after completing the pre-application form on the Turkish consular site. The operator and the list of centre cities have changed over the years, so take the current details from the embassy's website rather than an old blog post.
The tourist checklist follows the usual pattern: application form, photographs, covering letter, bank statements and income tax returns, employment or business proof, travel insurance, hotel reservations and a round-trip flight reservation. Building a believable Turkey itinerary
Turkish Airlines flies non-stop to Istanbul from Delhi and Mumbai, and IndiGo has operated the same city pairs; confirm current schedules, as capacity on these routes has shifted. From Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai and Kochi the common one-stop routings are through Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha or Sharjah.
A typical leisure plan is 8 to 10 nights: Istanbul, Cappadocia (Kayseri or Nevşehir airport) and the coast at Antalya or Izmir. Domestic hops need not be in the visa file; the international arrival and departure are what officers read. Returning from Antalya or Izmir via Istanbul on one ticket is fine. Make the hotel dates correspond with the flight dates night by night, because Turkish missions do compare them.
