Dummy ticket for a New Zealand visitor visa from India

Dummy ticket for a New Zealand visitor visa from India - sample flight reservation DEL to AKL (Auckland) with PNR, issued by FDT

A New Zealand Visitor Visa does not require a purchased flight ticket. Immigration New Zealand (INZ) requests evidence that you will leave, such as an outbound ticket or funds to purchase one. INZ also advises against non-refundable bookings before approval. A dummy ticket or held reservation can document the flights you intend to take while your application is being considered.

Two ways INZ lets you prove you will leave

Most countries either list a flight booking or stay silent. New Zealand spells out a choice. On the Visitor Visa page, the evidence that you plan to leave can be your ticket for travel out of New Zealand at the end of your stay, or documents such as bank or credit card statements showing you have sufficient funds to buy that ticket.

There is a catch in the second option. INZ states that the money for your ticket must be in addition to what you need to live on, which is at least NZD 1,000 for each month of the visit, or NZD 400 a month if your accommodation is prepaid. So an applicant relying on funds alone needs living money plus the cost of a fare from Auckland back to India, all visible in the statements.

A reservation recording the outbound flight sits between the two options. It is not a paid ticket and you should not label it as one, but it tells the officer the date, route and airline you intend to use, and your bank statement shows you can pay for it.

Why paying for the fare upfront is discouraged

INZ's own wording is that travellers should not book any non-refundable travel until after the Visitor Visa is approved. India to New Zealand fares are among the more expensive long-haul tickets from India, and change fees on discounted fares are steep. INZ reports that most visitor applications are processed within a couple of weeks at the time of writing, but individual cases can take longer if more information is requested.

The practical order is: apply with a clear plan, wait for the eVisa, then purchase the ticket. More on this distinction is in onward travel proof explained.

No non-stop flights: pick the transit point with care

There is no direct service between India and New Zealand at the time of writing, so every itinerary has at least one stop. The choice of stop affects what other visas you need.

Transit pointWhat Indian passport holders should check
Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Hong KongAirside connection on one booking is typically fine. Confirm the current rule if you plan to leave the airport
Sydney, Melbourne, BrisbaneIndian citizens need an Australian transit visa even to change planes. Apply for it before travel
DubaiLong single-stop routing to Auckland. No transit visa for a simple connection

An itinerary through Sydney with no Australian visa or transit visa in sight is a red flag in a New Zealand file. If you are not also visiting Australia, route through South-East Asia. If you are visiting both, see the Australia subclass 600 guide.

Open-jaw trips: in at Auckland, out from Christchurch or Queenstown

Many visitors land in Auckland, drive or fly south, and leave from Christchurch or Queenstown. That is a sensible plan, and your onward-travel evidence should reflect it. Indicate the outbound international flight from the South Island city, not a return from Auckland that you do not intend to use.

Domestic legs and the Interislander ferry do not need to be in your visa evidence. What INZ wants to see is the flight that takes you out of New Zealand. Christchurch and Queenstown international departures primarily go via Australia or Singapore, so the transit point table above applies here too.

Dates, seasons and the online form

The online application requests your intended arrival date and how long you will stay. Peak season runs from December to February, and Indian school holidays in April and May are also busy. Select a departure at least four to six weeks after you submit, and confirm the length of stay corresponds to your approved leave.

Remember the clock. New Zealand is six and a half to seven and a half hours ahead of India. A flight leaving Delhi on a Friday night with a Singapore connection reaches Auckland on Sunday. Count the stay from the arrival date so your onward flight falls inside the period you requested.

The visa is issued electronically. Carry a printout of the approval and your outbound flight details, because the airline at check-in and the border officer in Auckland can both ask how and when you are leaving.

Ordering a reservation for the application

If you would rather show flights than rely on the funds option, Flight Dummy Tickets issues a held reservation on a real airline with a PNR that appears on the airline's Manage Booking page. It costs ₹799 / $10 per passenger for one-way, return or multi-city reservations, and the same price applies to multi-city trips such as India to Auckland with a return from Christchurch. You receive the reservation by email and WhatsApp approximately 10 minutes after paying, and it stays verifiable for up to two weeks. It cannot be used to fly, and INZ alone decides the application.

Place the order at the booking page shortly prior to submission, and see how long a dummy ticket stays valid to plan the timing.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a New Zealand visitor visa without any flight booking at all?

Yes, INZ accepts evidence of sufficient funds to purchase a ticket out as an alternative to the ticket itself. That money must be on top of the living funds of NZD 1,000 a month, or NZD 400 if accommodation is prepaid.

Do I need an Australian visa if my Auckland flight connects in Sydney?

Indian passport holders need an Australian transit visa to change planes in Australia. If you do not want to apply for one, select a routing through Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok or Dubai instead.

Is a one-way reservation into New Zealand enough for the visa?

No. The evidence INZ requests is about leaving New Zealand. Indicate the flight out at the end of your stay, or the funds to buy it. A one-way inbound booking does not address that.

My parents are sponsoring my trip from Auckland. Whose funds count for the ticket?

INZ allows a sponsor's recent bank statements to show there is sufficient funds for your ticket out. Check the sponsorship requirements on the Visitor Visa page, as the sponsor must meet set conditions.

Will Auckland airport immigration ask to see my return ticket?

They can. Border officers may request proof of onward travel and funds on arrival, and airlines frequently verify before boarding. Travel with your actual ticket details once the visa is approved.
