Dummy ticket for Indonesia (Bali) visa on arrival: what counts as onward travel

Dummy ticket for Indonesia (Bali) visa on arrival - sample flight reservation BLR to DPS (Bali) with PNR, issued by FDT

Indian passport holders can visit Bali using a visa on arrival or the online e-VOA. The stay is valid for 30 days and can be extended once. Indonesian immigration lists a return or onward ticket as a requirement, and airlines check it before departure from India. A dummy ticket for a Bali visa has limited uses; the document used for travel must show a real international exit.

VOA or e-VOA: same visa, different queue

Both lead to the same single-entry visit visa. With the VOA you pay at the counter after landing in Denpasar or Jakarta and then go to immigration. With the e-VOA you apply on the Directorate General of Immigration's e-visa site before flying, pay by card, and can use the automated gates at Bali airport. The fee is IDR 500,000 at the time of writing, and the online version adds a small processing charge. An approved e-VOA must be used within 90 days of issue.

The visa covers tourism, family visits, business meetings and transit. It does not permit work. Your passport must have at least six months' validity on arrival; airlines turn passengers back for this more frequently than for anything else.

What the rule says about your flight out

Indonesia's e-visa pages state that the visitor must present a passport valid for more than six months and a return ticket, or an onward ticket to continue to another country, to the immigration officer. The e-VOA application also requests it. So unlike some destinations where onward proof is only airline practice, here it is written into the visa conditions.

Who checks:

  • The airline in India or at your transit point, before issuing the boarding pass for the Indonesia sector.
  • The e-VOA form, at the time of application.
  • Immigration at Denpasar or Jakarta, occasionally, primarily for travellers on one-way tickets.

Leaving from Jakarta when you landed in Bali

The exit does not have to be from the same airport or to India. Arriving at Denpasar and flying out of Jakarta, Surabaya or Lombok to another country is fine. So is a Bali to Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok flight.

What does not count is a domestic ticket. A Bali to Jakarta or Bali to Labuan Bajo booking shows travel inside Indonesia, not departure from it. If your trip is island-hopping with an undecided end, you still need one international flight dated within the visa period.

The 30 days include the day you arrive, so someone landing on the 1st must leave by the 30th. If you plan to extend to 60 days, the date on your onward ticket can cause questions at check-in when it falls beyond day 30. Carry the visa rules recording the extension option, or hold a ticket within 30 days that you can change later.

Three small formalities people forget

  1. All Indonesia arrival card. A free online declaration combining customs, health and immigration details, completed on the official All Indonesia site or app within three days before arrival. It requests your departure flight too.
  2. Bali tourist levy. IDR 150,000 per foreign visitor, paid through the Love Bali portal. It is separate from the visa fee and applies each time you enter Bali from abroad or from another Indonesian province.
  3. Extension timing. If you want the second 30 days, start the extension well before the first 30 expire, online for e-VOA holders or through an immigration office.

Getting there from India, and the Singapore transit trap

Non-stop flights to Denpasar have operated from Delhi on Air India and from Bengaluru on IndiGo, with further IndiGo services announced; confirm the current schedule. Most other travellers connect in Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok or Singapore on Malaysia Airlines, Batik Air, AirAsia, Thai Airways, Singapore Airlines or Scoot.

Mind the transit point. Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok are visa-free for Indians at the time of writing, so separate tickets with a self-transfer work. Singapore is not: on separate tickets you must clear immigration to re-check bags, which needs a visa or the 96-hour transit facility. Details are in our Singapore visa guide. A single through-ticket avoids the issue.

Honest use of a reservation for a Bali trip

Because the onward ticket is examined on the day you travel, the booking you carry to the airport should be ticketed. A held reservation is suited to steps that happen earlier: completing the e-VOA application while you compare fares, a visa for a second country on the same trip, or an employer's leave file.

FDT issues a genuine airline reservation with a PNR checkable on the airline's Manage Booking page for ₹799 per passenger, one-way or return, delivered by email and WhatsApp approximately 10 minutes after payment and verifiable for up to 2 weeks. It cannot be used to board. Sample documents are at sample 1, and ordering is at /booking.html. Whether you are admitted is for Indonesian immigration to decide. Frequently asked questions

Is Bali visa-free for Indians?

No. Indian passport holders need a visa, but it is easy to get: a visa on arrival at the airport or an e-VOA online before travel, giving 30 days with one possible 30-day extension.

Can my onward ticket be to Singapore or Kuala Lumpur instead of India?

Yes. The requirement is a return ticket or a ticket onward to another country. Confirm you can also enter that country; Singapore needs a visa for Indians, Malaysia currently does not.

Does a ferry ticket from Batam to Singapore count as leaving Indonesia?

It is an international departure, so in principle yes. Airline staff in India may be unfamiliar with it and harder to convince than with a flight booking, so allow extra time at check-in.

Is the e-VOA faster than paying on arrival?

Typically. You skip the payment counter and can use the automated gates at Denpasar. Apply only on the official Indonesian immigration e-visa site, as lookalike sites charge more.

Do children need their own onward ticket and tourist levy?

Every traveller needs a visa and an onward booking in their own name. The Bali levy is charged per foreign visitor; check the Love Bali portal for current exemptions.
