For an Austria Schengen visa from India, submit a flight reservation with your documents at VFS Global. You do not need to pay the full airfare at this stage. The Austrian Embassy in New Delhi decides the application. Your reservation should indicate the proposed journey to Vienna, Salzburg or Innsbruck and the return flight, with dates that correspond to your hotel bookings.

Who takes your Austrian file in India
You do not submit to the embassy directly. VFS Global collects Austrian applications and biometrics and forwards them to the Austrian Embassy in New Delhi, which assesses every file. VFS has no say in the outcome.
At the time of writing, Austrian applications are accepted at VFS centres in the large metros, including New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Pune and Ahmedabad, and travel-trade reports list more cities being added. The list changes, so confirm your city on the VFS Global Austria page before you plan a trip to a centre. The New Delhi centre moved to Kasturba Gandhi Marg, Connaught Place in January 2026, so go by the address printed on your appointment letter, not an old blog post.
What the flight paper needs to show
Austrian checklists request a flight reservation that shows the complete itinerary of the trip, in and out of the Schengen area. Wording is revised from time to time, so read the current tourism checklist on the VFS Austria page for India before your appointment.
The common Schengen rules apply here too: you apply to the country where you spend the most nights, you can stay 90 days in any 180, you need medical insurance of at least €30,000, and consulates generally advise against paying for a ticket before the visa is issued. The Schengen dummy ticket guide covers those in detail.
What matters for Austria specifically is that the reservation, the hotel bookings and the cover letter tell one story. If your hotels are in Salzburg and Hallstatt, a return from Vienna needs a line in the cover letter explaining the train back east.
Vienna is not the only way in
Air India flies Delhi to Vienna nonstop at the time of writing. From every other Indian city, and frequently from Delhi too, the usual itinerary is one stop. Western Austria is frequently easier to reach through Germany or Switzerland than through Vienna.
| Where you are staying | Typical routing from India | First Schengen entry |
|---|---|---|
| Vienna | Delhi nonstop, or one stop via Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich or Istanbul | Austria, Germany or Switzerland depending on the hub |
| Salzburg, Hallstatt | Fly to Munich, then train (under two hours to Salzburg) | Germany |
| Innsbruck, Tyrol ski resorts | Fly to Munich or Zurich, then train | Germany or Switzerland |
All three are normal. A reservation into Munich for a Salzburg holiday is not a red flag as long as your hotel nights are in Austria and your cover letter mentions the train.
When Austria is the right consulate, and when it is not
Austria is rarely visited alone. The classic central Europe loop is Vienna, Prague and Budapest, and the nights decide who gets your application. Three nights in Vienna, two in Prague and two in Budapest means Austria. Flip it to two nights in Vienna and four in Prague and the file belongs with the Czech authorities, even if you fly in and out of Vienna because the Delhi nonstop is convenient.
If the nights are exactly equal, the country you enter first takes the application. This is the point at which the reservation matters: a Vienna arrival supports an Austrian application in a tie, a Munich arrival points to Germany.
The same logic applies to Switzerland plus Austria rail trips. Count the nights honestly before making the booking the VFS slot, because an application lodged with the wrong country can be refused as inadmissible.
Christmas markets, ski weeks and summer: when to order
Austria has three demand peaks from India: June to August, the Christmas market weeks from late November, and the ski season after that. Appointment slots for the summer and for December tighten well ahead of those dates, so check for a slot early.
Fix the appointment first, then the reservation. A held reservation stays checkable for a limited period, so order it a few days before your appointment with travel dates that leave room for the embassy's processing time. Dating the outbound flight three days after your appointment tells the officer the plan was not thought through.
Mistakes that are specific to Austrian itineraries
- Vienna in, Vienna out, but no Vienna hotel on the last night. If you end in Innsbruck, show how you get back, or exit from Munich or Zurich.
- Counting a Bratislava day trip as nothing. It is an hour from Vienna and in Slovakia. Mention it in the itinerary; it does not change the main destination.
- Applying to Austria because slots were available when most nights are in Germany or Czechia.
- Winter routings through small airports. Seasonal ski flights to Innsbruck or Salzburg do not run all year; a reservation on a flight that does not operate on your date cannot be issued.
Getting a reservation for the file
From FDT you get a genuine airline reservation whose PNR can be looked up under Manage Booking on the airline's site. It is a held booking, not a paid ticket, and cannot be used to board. The price is ₹799 / $10 per passenger for one-way, return or multi-city reservations, delivered by email and WhatsApp approximately 10 minutes after payment. Order at the booking page, and see how to verify the PNR before you print it. Whether the visa is granted is entirely the embassy's decision.
Frequently asked questions
Can I show a flight into Munich for an Austria visa application?
Yes, if your nights are mainly in Austria. Munich is the usual gateway for Salzburg and Tyrol. Say in your cover letter that you continue by train, and keep hotel bookings in Austria for those nights.
I am doing Vienna, Prague and Budapest. Which country do I apply to?
The one with the most nights. If two countries tie, apply to the one you enter first. Your flight reservation should then show arrival in that country.
Does the Austrian Embassy want a paid ticket?
The requirement is a flight reservation covering the full itinerary. Confirm the current checklist on the VFS Austria page for India, and purchase the actual ticket only after the visa is in your passport.
Is there a direct flight from India to Vienna?
At the time of writing Air India operates Delhi to Vienna nonstop. Schedules change, so confirm the days of operation before choosing dates for your reservation.
