A UK Standard Visitor visa application from India does not require a dummy ticket or other flight booking. UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) lists flight bookings among documents not to submit as evidence, apart from the transit exception. A reservation can still help you plan dates for the form or other parts of the journey. These situations are explained below.
| Visa | Standard Visitor visa, applied for online on gov.uk |
|---|---|
| Who decides | UK Visas and Immigration (Home Office), not VFS |
| Biometrics in India | VFS Global visa application centres |
| Flight booking required? | No. UKVI's guide says not to use flight bookings as evidence, unless you are transiting |
| Earliest you can apply | Three months before your travel date |
| Where a reservation helps | Transit applications, fixing dates for the form, leave and sponsor letters |
What the gov.uk supporting-documents guide says about flights
UKVI publishes a guide to supporting documents for people visiting the UK. It has a section headed documents you should not use as evidence, and that list includes hotel bookings and flight bookings (unless transiting), alongside things like travel insurance and personal photographs.
The same guide reminds you that submitting documents does not guarantee a visa and that you should bear this in mind when making any bookings. Put together, the message is clear: UKVI does not want you to pay for a ticket before the decision, and a booking will not strengthen a visitor application. What the caseworker weighs is your finances, your job or business in India, your travel history and whether your stated plan is believable.
The one case where a booking is asked for: transit
If you are only changing planes in the UK and need a Visitor in Transit visa, the rules differ. The guide requests evidence that your onward journey from the UK is confirmed and leaves within 48 hours of arrival, and it gives travel booking confirmation as the example. You also need to demonstrate you can enter the country you are going on to.
For transit, then, an itinerary recording the inbound flight to Heathrow and the onward flight out is directly relevant. Whether a held reservation satisfies the caseworker is UKVI's call, so read the current transit page before you decide what to upload. Many Indian travellers do not need a transit visa at all if they hold a valid US, Canadian, Australian or New Zealand visa and stay airside, but that exemption has conditions, so check it on gov.uk.
Dates in the online form still need a real plan behind them
The Standard Visitor form requests the date you plan to arrive and the date you plan to leave, how much the trip will cost you and who is paying. Those answers should correspond with your employer's leave letter, any invitation from family in the UK and your bank balance.
This is the point at which a tentative itinerary earns its place. Looking at actual flights for your dates tells you a realistic fare to quote as trip cost and stops you entering an arrival date that falls before a decision is likely. You can apply up to three months before travel. Gov.uk says most visitor decisions come within about three weeks of your biometrics appointment at the time of writing, though this stretches in the summer and December peaks.
You do not have to upload the itinerary. Keep it for your own consistency, or hand it to the person writing your invitation so their dates match yours. For more on how an itinerary differs from a ticket, see flight itinerary for a visa application.
Flying from India to the UK: routes worth knowing
London Heathrow has non-stop flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai, operated by a mix of Air India, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and IndiGo at the time of writing. Air India also serves Gatwick and Birmingham from some cities, and Manchester has had direct service from Mumbai. From Kochi, Ahmedabad, Kolkata or Pune, the usual pattern is one stop in Dubai, Doha or Abu Dhabi.
Two practical points for planning dates:
- Westbound flights land the same calendar day; the return leaves the UK in the evening and reaches India the next morning. Your leave letter should cover the arrival date in India, not the departure date from London.
- If you plan to continue to Ireland or the Schengen area, the UK visa does not cover either. Each needs its own visa. See our Ireland guide.
At the VFS centre and after the decision
VFS Global runs the UK visa application centres in India, with centres in the metros and a wider network in cities such as Ahmedabad, Pune, Chandigarh, Jalandhar, Kochi and Jaipur. Staff take your fingerprints and photo and scan documents if you have not uploaded them yourself. They cannot advise on what to include and play no part in the decision.
Do not carry a flight booking to the centre expecting it to be requested. It will not be. Purchase your real ticket once the visa is issued and check that the validity dates cover your trip, because a visitor visa is valid from a start date that you influence through the travel date you declared.
When ordering a reservation makes sense for a UK trip
Be honest with yourself about why you want one. For a standard tourist or family visit, UKVI does not need it. It is reasonable for a transit application, for a sponsor or employer who wants to see proposed flights before issuing a letter, or when another country's visa in the same trip, such as Schengen, does list a flight reservation.
If that is your case, Flight Dummy Tickets issues a held airline reservation with a PNR you can retrieve on the airline's Manage Booking page. It costs ₹799 / $10 per passenger for one-way, return or multi-city reservations, is delivered by email and WhatsApp in approximately 10 minutes, and stays verifiable for up to two weeks. It is not a paid ticket and cannot be used to board. Order at the booking page, and read dummy ticket vs real ticket first if you are unsure which you need.
Frequently asked questions
Will my UK visitor visa be refused if I do not upload a flight ticket?
Not for that reason. UKVI's own guide lists flight bookings among documents you should not use as evidence for a visit visa, unless you are transiting. Refusals turn on finances, ties to India and credibility of the plan.
Should I book my London flight before the VFS biometrics appointment?
No. The guidance advises applicants to remember that documents do not guarantee a visa when making bookings. Wait for the decision, then purchase the ticket for dates inside the visa's validity.
Do I need an onward booking for a UK Visitor in Transit visa?
Yes. UKVI requests evidence that your onward journey is confirmed and departs within 48 hours of arrival, such as a travel booking confirmation, plus proof you can enter your destination country.
What travel dates should I enter in the UK visa form?
Enter the dates you genuinely intend to travel, set at least a few weeks after your biometrics appointment. They should correspond to your leave letter and any invitation. You can apply up to three months ahead.
Can I use my UK visitor visa to visit Ireland or Europe on the same trip?
Generally no. Schengen countries need a Schengen visa, and Ireland needs an Irish visa unless your visa carries the British-Irish Visa Scheme endorsement. Check each country's rules before planning the route.
