Dummy ticket for a Spain visa: BLS, routings and single-entry traps

Dummy ticket for a Spain visa - sample flight reservation DEL to MAD (Madrid) with PNR, issued by FDT

Spain's Schengen applications in India proceed through BLS International rather than VFS Global. Submit a round-trip flight reservation with the other documents; a paid ticket is not required at this stage. The Spanish Embassy or a Consulate General decides the application. Check any proposed visits to Andorra, Gibraltar or Morocco against the entry conditions of your visa.

BLS International handles Spain

Spanish visa applications in India are accepted only by BLS International, on behalf of the Embassy in New Delhi and Spain's Consulates General. BLS runs centres in cities including New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Chandigarh. Each centre serves particular states, and you are expected to use the one covering your place of residence.

The BLS Spain India website publishes a separate checklist for each mission and visa type. Download the tourist checklist for your jurisdiction and take the flight wording from it. In general it calls for a round-trip flight reservation or itinerary in the applicant's name; if your version says something different, follow your version.

Madrid or Barcelona: building the routing

Air India's European network, as published in its 2026 route maps, does not include Spain, and nonstop services between India and Spain have come and gone over the years. Plan on one stop and confirm current schedules if you want a nonstop.

The common connections are Frankfurt, Munich, Paris, Amsterdam and Zurich on European carriers, Istanbul, and the Gulf hubs. Gulf services were hit by airspace closures in early 2026, so confirm the carrier is flying the route in your travel month before you pick it.

Spanish trips from India tend to run Barcelona, Madrid, then Andalusia (Seville, Granada, Málaga), or the reverse. An open-jaw reservation, into Barcelona and out of Madrid or Málaga, can serve that purpose better than a return to one city. The AVE high-speed train links Barcelona, Madrid and Seville; name those rail legs in the cover letter.

Side trips that break a single-entry visa

This is the point at which Spanish itineraries go wrong more than those for other countries. Three popular excursions leave the Schengen area:

Side tripStatusWhat it means
Andorra, by bus from BarcelonaNot in Schengen; reachable only through Spain or FranceComing back into Spain is a second entry
Gibraltar, from Málaga or SevilleBritish territory with its own entry rulesCheck Gibraltar's visa requirement and whether re-entry to Spain counts as a new entry
Tangier, by ferry from Tarifa or AlgecirasMorocco, outside SchengenMoroccan visa rules apply, and return to Spain is a second entry

If any of these is in your plan, request a multiple-entry visa on the form and indicate the excursion in your itinerary with dates. A cover letter that mentions a day in Andorra next to a request for a single entry is a contradiction an officer will notice. If you are granted a single entry, drop the excursion.

Islands and domestic flights

The Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Ibiza) and the Canary Islands (Tenerife, Gran Canaria) are part of Spain and of the Schengen area. Flights to them from Barcelona or Madrid are domestic, and a Spanish Schengen visa covers them.

They do add flights. If you want Ibiza or Tenerife shown on the reservation along with the international legs, that is a multi-city booking. The alternative is to indicate the international return and list the island flight in the itinerary with a matching hotel booking. See how to set out a flight itinerary.

Spain with Portugal or the south of France

Under the common Schengen rules you apply to the country with the most nights, or to the first country entered if nights are equal. You also need €30,000 medical cover, must stay within 90 days in any 180, and are advised to purchase the actual ticket only once the visa is granted. Those are explained in the Schengen guide.

For Spain the usual partners are Portugal and France. Seven nights in Spain and three in Lisbon is a Spanish application through BLS. Four in Lisbon and Porto and four in Spain is a tie, decided by where you first land: fly into Lisbon and it is Portugal's file, through VFS; fly into Madrid and it is Spain's. In a tie, your reservation is the document that settles which consulate is correct, so decide the entry city prior to booking any appointment.

Peak months and when to order

Spanish appointments are tightest from April to September. July and August add festival demand: San Fermín in Pamplona in early July and La Tomatina near Valencia at the end of August both draw Indian travellers on fixed dates that cannot slide. Schengen rules allow applications up to six months ahead, so use that for date-bound trips.

Once the BLS appointment is fixed, order the reservation a few days before it. FDT issues a genuine airline reservation with a PNR you can verify on the airline's Manage Booking page, for ₹799 per passenger, delivered by email and WhatsApp approximately 10 minutes after payment. Use the booking page or the chat assistant. It is a held booking, not a ticket, and the visa decision is the consulate's.

Frequently asked questions

Do I apply for a Spain visa at VFS?

No. In India, Spain uses BLS International. Book your appointment and download the checklist from the BLS Spain India website for your jurisdiction.

Can I visit Andorra from Barcelona on a single-entry Schengen visa?

Andorra is outside the Schengen area, so returning to Spain is a second entry. Request a multiple-entry visa and indicate the excursion in your itinerary, or leave Andorra out.

Are the Canary Islands covered by a Spanish Schengen visa?

Yes. The Canary and Balearic Islands are part of Spain and the Schengen area. Flights to them from the mainland are domestic.

Equal nights in Spain and Portugal: where do I apply?

To the country you enter first. If your reservation lands in Lisbon, apply to Portugal; if it lands in Madrid or Barcelona, apply to Spain.
