Dummy ticket for South Africa visa: the return flight reservation rule

Dummy ticket for South Africa visa - sample flight reservation BOM to JNB (Johannesburg) with PNR, issued by FDT

Indian passport holders require a visa or Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for South Africa. The VFS Global tourist checklist requests a full return flight reservation in the applicant's name, covering the entire journey. A dummy ticket for a South Africa visa provides this held booking without purchasing the actual airfare.

Two doors in 2026: the ETA and the VFS visa

South Africa's Department of Home Affairs launched an Electronic Travel Authorisation in late 2025, with India among the first four countries. After a pilot for G20 delegates it was opened to tourists, and in April 2026 the department described it as fully rolled out. Applications are made on the official ETA portal with a passport scan and a selfie for biometric matching, and decisions are targeted within a day or two. Reports describe it as allowing stays of up to 90 days. In its first phases it could be used only when arriving at OR Tambo, Cape Town or Lanseria airports.

The paper route still matters. Business, study, family and other categories, and anyone the portal does not accept, apply for a visitor visa through VFS Global, which runs South Africa visa centres in Indian cities for the High Commission in New Delhi and the Consulate General in Mumbai. Approved tour operators can also file group applications digitally under the Trusted Tour Operator Scheme.

The exact wording on the tourist checklist

The VFS tourist visa checklist for India lists, among other items:

  • the application form submitted to the correct mission and signed in both places;
  • two photographs on a white background and a copy of the passport bio page;
  • bank statements, with requirements that vary by mission;
  • proof of where you will stay in South Africa;
  • a full return flight reservation with name reflecting, recording the itinerary of the entire trip.

Note the word reservation. The mission wants your name on a booking that covers every flight from leaving India to returning, including the Johannesburg to Cape Town leg if that is part of your routing. It does not request you to purchase the ticket first. Read the current PDF on the VFS site before you assemble the file, since checklists are updated.

Does the ETA need a ticket?

Published descriptions of the ETA form mention passport details, a photo and travel information. We could not confirm from an official page whether a flight booking must be uploaded, so check the portal's own list when submitting your application.

Separately from the form, South Africa expects visitors to hold a return or onward ticket, and immigration officers at OR Tambo can request it along with accommodation details and funds. Airlines verify before boarding for the same reason they do everywhere: they pay to bring back a refused passenger. An ETA or visa is permission to present yourself at the border, not a guarantee of admission.

Routing: there is usually no non-stop

At the time of writing we could not confirm any scheduled non-stop flight between India and South Africa. South African Airways has spoken of returning to the Mumbai to Johannesburg route, and the two governments have discussed air links, so check for updates. Until then, itineraries from Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai or Hyderabad connect through:

  • Dubai, Doha or Abu Dhabi on Emirates, Qatar Airways or Etihad;
  • Addis Ababa on Ethiopian Airlines or Nairobi on Kenya Airways;
  • Mauritius or the Seychelles on Air Mauritius or Air Seychelles.

The African hubs are frequently cheapest, but they bring a health rule. South Africa requires a yellow fever vaccination certificate from travellers arriving from, or transiting for more than 12 hours through, a country with risk of yellow fever, and Ethiopia and Kenya are on that list. A short airside connection is typically exempt. Check the transit time on your reservation against the current health requirement.

Designing the itinerary the mission will read

Most Indian holidaymakers combine Cape Town, the Garden Route and a safari near Kruger, flying into one city and out of the other. Put the complete chain on one reservation where possible: India to Cape Town via the hub, then Johannesburg back to India. If the Cape Town to Johannesburg or Hoedspruit flight is booked separately, add it, because the checklist says entire trip.

Match everything else to those dates: leave letter, hotel vouchers, and travel dates on the form. Leave enough time between submission and departure for the mission's processing, and remember the passport needs two blank visa pages or the airline may refuse to carry you.

Ordering the reservation for a VFS appointment

FDT issues a genuine airline reservation with a PNR that the mission, or you, can check on the airline's Manage Booking page. A one-way or return itinerary is ₹799 per passenger; a multi-city plan with an internal South African flight has the same ₹799 / $10 charge per passenger. It is delivered by email and WhatsApp approximately 10 minutes after payment and stays verifiable for up to 2 weeks, so order shortly before submission. Start at /booking.html. Applicants filing with the Consulate General can also read dummy ticket in Mumbai.

It is a held booking, not a paid ticket, and cannot be used to board. The visa or ETA decision is made by the South African authorities. Purchase your flights after approval, and learn to check the booking yourself with how to verify a dummy ticket PNR.

Frequently asked questions

Does the South African visa checklist ask for a paid ticket or a reservation?

The VFS tourist checklist for India requests a full return flight reservation with the applicant's name, recording the itinerary of the entire trip. It does not say a purchased ticket.

Can Indian tourists use the South Africa ETA instead of going to VFS?

At the time of writing, Indian ordinary passport holders travelling for tourism are among those eligible on the official ETA portal, initially for arrival at OR Tambo, Cape Town and Lanseria airports. Check the portal for current eligibility and entry points.

Do I need a yellow fever certificate if I fly via Addis Ababa?

South Africa requires it for travellers who arrive from, or transit for more than 12 hours through, a yellow fever risk country, which includes Ethiopia. Confirm the current rule and your transit duration prior to booking.

Must the internal Cape Town to Johannesburg flight be on my reservation?

The checklist requests the itinerary of the entire trip, so include internal flights that are part of your route, or be ready to explain how you will travel between cities.

How many blank pages does my passport need for South Africa?

Two blank visa pages are the long-standing requirement, and airlines check this at the counter. Renew the passport first if you are short of pages.
